Hi, everyone!
I'm Viannah Duncan, usually published as V.E. Duncan. By day I'm an events manager for a small publishing company located in Gardena, CA. By night (and whenever I can spare a few minutes of time!) I write memoir, narrative nonfiction, and poetry. I've never actually been part of a listserv, but I'm game to learn the ropes. From what I've seen so far, it seems a bit like an online forum, so I think I'll adapt just fine. ^_^
I have an MFA in Creative Writing from Wilkes University and am about to begin an MA in Grant Writing and Evaluation at Concordia University of Chicago in May. It's a twenty-month program geared toward working people who want to fit school around their lives and not the other way around. I also freelance edit for Less Than Three Press, copyedit for Hippocampus Magazine (check out HippoCamp http://hippocamp2016.hippocampusmagazine.com/, a great nonfiction conference in Pennsylvania in the summer!), and am one of two poetry editors for East Jasmine Review. Additionally, I was an associate editor for the anthology collections BELIEVE ME NOT (Lemur Publishing 2014) and IT'S ABOUT TIME (Lemur Publishing 2015). This year, I stepped up as lead editor for a third collection of short stories, which has yet to be named but is due out this coming October. I've got other editing credits to my name as well, but I think that I've bragged enough for a while at least!
I am VERY interested in coming up with an #AWP17 proposal, but since 2016 was my first year at the Conference and Bookfair, I'm not even sure where to begin. Can someone help me out? Alternatively, I'd love to be involved in another person's proposal, as well. I'm interested in a range of topics, including the following:
-Writing as therapy
-Fan fiction
-the Oxford comma
-the ups and down of anthology creation and publication
-the false dichotomy between fiction and poetry
-Unreliable narrator in nonfiction
-NaNoWriMo
-Making writing/editing/publishing accessible to women, differently abled, and LGBTQ writers
-the intersection of writing and feminism
-multi-genre/hybrid works
-objective vs. subjective
-class divisions and bridges among writers
-creative writing case studies
-the craft of writing
While I was thinking about this introduction but before I wrote it, I didn't think I would have anything relevant to say, but obviously that's not the case! It's very nice to meet you all. I hope to see you again at AWP in Washington next year.
